Fierce Winds Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to stay indoors as strong winds strike the nation.

Powerful gusts attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 households lacking electricity and forced authorities to call off over 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

The gales are affecting the entire southern region and southern sections of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released rare severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been urged to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting residences mostly in the southern region, although agencies state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have indicated that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, and trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended due to the weather, whereas some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have issued a crisis declaration, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Amid Harsh Conditions

The powerful gales on this day coincide with many of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the intense climate has compelled them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or cancelled.

Similar gusts are impacting Australia, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Authorities have announced flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
