The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
