An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill presented on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
